Rick is a professional writer with more than 40 years’ experience crafting creative messaging for a wide array of businesses, non-profit organizations, and campaigns. He graduated from Washington State University with a B.A. degree in English and later obtained a Master’s degree in Education from Pepperdine University.

As a pro-small business state senator, and as one who has owned and operated small businesses, Rick understands the challenges small businesses face and is adept at helping others overcome those challenges. His sales and account management experience includes engagements with the Seattle Center (where he coined the name “Bumbershoot” and handled publicity for the now popular arts festival at the Center), Airborne Freight Corporation, Aero Go Inc., Keep Washington Green, and others.

In Hawaii, Rick was editor and publisher of a popular newspaper on Maui devoted to good government, small business, and environmental consciousness prior to serving as chief aide and spokesman for the Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney. He ran several successful political campaigns before becoming a candidate himself and being elected to the Hawaii State Senate before retiring from politics and returning to his home State of Washington.
